We're Minnesota girls!
Mom was almost always at the sewing machine.... Joanie and I had matching dresses for every holiday and special occasion. (Our brothers even got matching shirts sometimes!) I remember asking mom when I was in junior high to please NOT make another matching outfit for us.... I was so embarrassed to be in the same dress as my "little" sister!! Mom giggled when, as a senior in high school, I asked her to sew Joanie and I "coordinating" dresses for my senior choir concert where she and I were singing a duet. Mom's love of sewing was a gift she gave to both her girls.... and now this gift has given us an opportunity to work together at something we both love! Thanks MOM!!
I graduated from Bemidji State University with a degree in graphic design. My first job out of college was with a small commercial design company about an hour west of Minneapolis. With a firecracker female boss, I learned all about "girlpower" and how to weave your creativity and passions into work that you love. Along with a team of talented artist, we designed soft goods for the home decor industry, working with companies such as West Point Pepperell, York Wallcovering, Springs Industries, Benartex Inc., Crown Craft and Target Corporation. Unfortunately that business closed in 1996. In 1997, my husband and I started our own graphic design and marketing company, Grufruff Design Inc.
Joanie graduated from University of Wisconsin, Stout with a degree in social work and family development. She is one of those patient people with a talent for helping... she worked for several years making her corner of the world a bit better. In the late '90s she was looking for some extra income so she could stay at home to raise her young family... sewing seemed to be a natural option. The company I worked for had some sampling needs and other adjacent companies also needed some sample sewing so she and I started a sideline sewing business, Tailormade by Design.
We have enjoyed a range of work and the opportunity to provide services for Benartex, Inc., Anna Griffin Fabrics, Baum Textiles, Windham Fabrics, Kanvas, Contempo, Blend Fabrics, Penny Rose Fabrics, Red Rooster Fabrics, Blue Hill Fabrics, Newcastle Fabric, Westminster Fabrics, Springs Industries and Marcus Brothers. Our quilts and projects have been featured in magazines such as American Patchwork & Quilting, Quilts & More, McCall's Quilting, Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting, Quilt Magazine, Quilter's World, Quick Quilts, The Quilter, Fabric Trends, Quiltmaker and Family Circle.
In 2008 we decided to venture a bit further with our business and kit the quilts and projects we create that are featured in these magazines with an online quilt shop! And so here we are.... www.sewquiltcraft.com We are having soooo much fun! We have always enjoyed being behind the scenes, working with the textile companies to highlight their new fabrics and coming up with new projects for you, the customers and now we have the added opportunity to really connect with you! It is fabulous!
Just a tidbit more....
